Soccer legend Hope Solo charged with DWI with children in car: Report

A retired star goalie for the U.S. women’s national soccer team was charged with a DWI on Thursday while having her two children in the vehicle, according to authorities.

Hope Solo, a 40-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist, was taken into custody in the parking lot of a Walmart in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and booked at Forsyth County Jail for processing. She was charged with impaired driving, resisting arrest, and child abuse, law enforcement officials informed TMZ Sports.

“On the advice of counsel, Hope can’t speak about this situation, but she wants everyone to know that her kids are her life, that she was released immediately and is now at home with her family,” said Rich Nichols, the attorney for Solo, in a statement.

“The story is more sympathetic than the initial charges suggest,” Nichols said, adding that Solo is looking “forward to her opportunity to defend these charges.”

This is not Solo’s first run-in with law enforcement. In 2014, she was arrested after having been accused of hitting her sister and then-17-year-old nephew, according to USA Today. The charges brought against her were dropped in 2018.

Solo also faced a six-month suspension by U.S. Soccer in 2016 after she made “unacceptable” comments following a loss to the Swedish soccer team.
