When a car is being restored, repaired or just moved around in a large storage facility, there are times when it needs to get from one place in a garage to another without use of its engine. Sometimes it needs to be at a different angle to make repair work a little easier. In other situations, it may need to wedge into place among tightly-packed vehicles. That’s where car dollies, sometimes called car skates, come in. They lift the car and support its weight while it’s rolled or pivoted into position. Caster-style wheels make turning at an angle or around corners easy.
The keys to a good dolly are smooth-rolling wheels, strength for support of the vehicle and durability. Always check the weight capacity of the dolly before you buy, and seriously consider whether it has brakes. Lockable brakes are handy if you plan to leave a vehicle up on dollies for a long time, but many otherwise fine choices don’t include them.
Car dollies generally come in two types. Standard dollies require that the car be jacked up off the ground and then lowered onto the waiting dolly. Hydraulic dollies are an all-in-one tool that raises the car onto the dolly. That convenience almost always means a higher price.
